Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood 2019
Reminded me of how Hollywood — which began with westerns — was indebted to that genre from the start because its pioneers were basically living out their own western, prospecting for cinematic nuggets in a barren desert with whatever meagre resources they could find — a horse, a revolver — eventually creating a civilisation. Trap 2024
As a Shyamalan fan I was nervous about this one’s middling reception following the disappointments of Old and Cabin: three misfires in a row and I would have to admit that M Night's lost it. Thankfully, the film exceeded my expectations. I can’t talk in-depth after one viewing, but in regards to mise-en-scene and narration there’s definitely more freshness and invention in Shyamalan’s revelation of the mind of a killer than the last two glorified teleplays.
