I hadn’t seen this movie in a decade plus and on rewatch it is so goddamn GOOD. Gripping performances from Jackson and Spacey. Tense. Smart. Sleek. THE CINEMATOGRAPHY.
Yeah. This one’s great.
I really love 90s teen films - the nostalgia is STRONG. But sadly that’s the only thing this movie has going for it: nostalgia.
It’s actually really, really ugly to look at. Cinematography akin to a grainy Girls Gone Wild VHS with wildly inconsistent color grading. Was half of the movie’s audio lost in a fire too cuz wayyy too many scenes are ADR’d and horribly mixed. Ew.
Freddie Prinze, God bless him. Can’t act his way out of a…
A character repeatedly yells “WHY. CAN’T. I. DIE” and I deeply resonated with that as I sat in the theater watching whatever the hell this movie is.
This is not horror. At all. The marketing department didn’t have a fucking clue what to do with this so they coasted on the A24 of it all and said okay weirdo horror it is… and it is not.
Wherever you think the story’s going, it doesn’t go there. And wherever you think…
The acting from the majority of the cast, especially the dad, was as awkward and uneven as the pacing of this movie. I vacillated btween should I take this seriously or is this so bad it’s good, which is an uncomfortable posture to maintain for the over 2hr runtime… which should have been 90 min., MAX.
This movie has zero zilch NO tension.
Pretty sure the “Frenchmen” were actually Americans putting on the most stereotypical French accents ever committed to digital celluloid.
There was a nice didn’t-see-that-coming moment at the end, though. I appreciated that.
