Sing Sing is a poignant portrait of rehabilitation and testament to the transformative power of art and humanity. Balancing touchingly warm and tender moments against a cold and callous backdrop that is maximum security prison life, the message conveyed here is a universal one: healing through art isn't just possible but essential for survival and processing of trauma. All you have to do is look at the cast of the film 85% of whom were formerly incarcerated at Sing Sing (and are playing themselves) to see the power of art, community, vulnerability & hope.
As the director Jonathon Glazer puts it “To acknowledge the couple as human beings, was a big part of the awfulness of this entire journey of the film, but I kept thinking that, if we could do so, we would maybe see ourselves in them. For me it's not a film about the past. It tries to talk about the present, about us and our similarity to the perpetrators, and not about our similarity to the victims”
