Jeymes Samuel is 2-for-2 in my book. A hilarious satire that pokes fun at the concept of religion, redemption and more.
A modern rom-com with elite chemistry between the two leads.
So, Challengers.
Do you begin with the cinematography? Or the action shots of tennis? Or the score done by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross? We can get to THAT scene at some point but the beauty in Challengers is, none of these three people are innocent. They are all twisted, beautiful messes brought together by intensity and control — which is exactly what tennis is.
Horrible, wickedly flawed people tied together by one of the most erotic and alluring scenes put on film in 2024 and combined with an absolute MOVIE STAR performance from Zendaya? Oh, it’s easily one of my early faves of the year.
Dev Patel dreamed of doing action movies and tapped into not only his influences but those of Indian filmmakers and more. Top notch action, a linear and digestible story and an easy entry into the popcorn/revenge-style hero movies which were paraded around in the 80s and 90s.
