Roald Dahl's The Witches 2020
Where do I start. I had heard rumblings about a remake for years. Growing up repeatedly watching original intrigued me to give this remake a fair watch. This was unfortunately a futile task mainly due to two main flaws: 1) I carried with me inherent biases based on nostalgia 2) I had watched the CGI filled, flamboyantly silly trailer and was already filled with looming disappointment.
Overall, the film is clunky. It seems to have been scrapped together+released rather quickly…

A cult classic for good reason: insane practical SFX, explosions, guns, muscle cars, babes. The story is not just surface level too, it's loaded with timeless symbolism and a great post-watch discussion. This film has it all. This is truly indie filmmaking at its core. Bonus: the sequels are all really fun too!
