Altered States 1980
Plot equivalent would be, man does acid, has a bad trip. Friends tell him to never take acid. Man takes more while insisting he can have a good time. Has a bad time. Friends tell him to stop. Man takes more. Man has a bad time. Friends carry him off to bed and tuck him in for the night.
Visually unreal. Some sequences are 10/10 visual masterpieces.

It’s not the best thing to come from Ghibli, but it’s probably my favourite. Contained story with low stakes and a main character you’re constantly charmed by. There is so much beautiful environment work, all of sky shots are gorgeous.
