  Film by and for submental morons. Why is Anya Taylor-Joy playing a manic pixie sniper girl?? I thought we had stopped making movies where the one black character dies immediately and unceremoniously but here we are.

  Got lucky enough to see this gem at a Q&A with both Dafoe and Sarandon. Such a great film that captures the tail end of New York decay and grime in the early 90s. There's one version of a filmic midlife crisis that entails suburban ennui and another about the long tail of trying to get out from under addiction or relationships acquired during youth: this film is the latter.

  Moments of genius interspersed with the dumbest shit I've ever seen put to film. A bizarre combination of garish '70s camp and brutal violence makes it almost the total opposite of Boogie Nights' realism (though in retrospect PT Anderson definitely lifted some cinematic ideas from this film — compare the pool scenes). The writing in this movie is straight trash but gets somewhat redeemed by De Palma's characteristically god-tier direction and cinematography.
