binged this in one sitting a couple nights ago, i had nothing but tears then but I still cannot shake them from my brain so here’s some Intellectualised Reflections:

When someone (or a class of individuals) commits violent/hateful acts, it is so easy to reduce or outright remove their humanity. After all, how could they have had any in the first place, considering what they’ve done? reminded me of spirited away but way more dark and sad. Interesting to see a miyazaki that reads less about imagining a new world and more about accepting the chaotic, grief stricken world we are given (or at least that was my reading)? strong pans labyrinth comparisons to be made too i think. one of the more haunting and impactful ghibli movies and one that feels born of Our Current Predicament. will be thinking it over and making sense of it internally in the days/weeks to come I’m sure

I don’t even know what to say. This is the most insightful, funny, relatable and then tragic depiction of young adulthood (20s-30s) that I’ve ever seen. Just so beautiful and touching and so fucking sad and I love it but this felt almost masochistic in its abilities to tell such deep truths about the feeling of this period at least in my life. It takes my love for mushy, over-romanticised coming of age movies and throws them in my face…
