An incredible payoff for a spectacular setup. From the scope to the score to the spectacle. Not a perfect film, but a perfect “experience.” A testament to how a good film can warp reality and belief.
At the risk of sounding too much like a Wes Anderson fan boy, this is somehow the least personal and simultaneously most personal film in his career. It oscillates, it distracts, it meanders, but what emotions hide in the foreground are ever present in the background. Anderson put on an incredible display of vulnerability in creating a work of art that challenged the fear and uncertainty at the heart of his own filmmaking.
The themes are so powerful, at least…
I thought that this movie would make that one song make sense. Turns out, they have nothing to do with each other.
The film captures the wistfulness that makes so many films immortal, displaying the “cages” we fear and those which we put ourselves in voluntarily.
