It's funny (it really isn't). For years I've thought people who claimed a movie "ruined their childhood" were anal-retentive, overprotective blowhards who treasured their old comics or cartoon characters a bit too much. Until it happened to me. Because The Rise of Skywalker destroys so many of the stakes and key story beats from the original trilogy (the movies that shaped my childhood love of movies), I feel like I can honestly say this movie, at least in part, ruined…

    Two Distant Strangers

This Oscar winner for Best Live Action Short is utterly preposterous in nearly every way. It takes a cynical filmmaker to portray a cop as actually looking forward to not just killing a black man, but doing it repeatedly in this weird time loop story. The Academy should be ashamed of themselves for rewarding such pandering garbage. Trevon Free, shame on you.

Perhaps the most Mametian script Mamet ever Mamet-ed. After all these years, I'm still not convinced this works as a narrative movie, but damned if I don't love hearing these words delivered by these actors. Alec Baldwin's single-scene cameo remains one of the best monologues ever.

Where is the modern playwright-turned-screenwriter giving us new movies like this? Fuck, man.

Watched/listened while driving a U-Haul truck on a 4-hour drive, so I badly needed the laughs. I thought the idea of making the entire special about he and his wife's journey to having their first kid was fantastic. When you can tie in your personal experience to the art you're making, it will almost always be better as a result. I like that he's still willing to touch subjects that a certain segment of society will shun him for, and…

At the time of my review, more than 2,000 people have rated this movie on Letterboxd, and there's no numerical rating listed. There are short films with 45 ratings that have a number listed. Not a good look, Letterboxd.

Yes, Matt Walsh is a conservative. But he's not psychotic, and he's not far-right. He's also not as extreme as someone like Michael Moore, who can win an Oscar for a much more skewed film than this. But I'm still gonna…

    #35: DETECTIVE KNIGHT: ROGUE

Cinematic legends Edward Drake and Corey Large return to bring us the first in a trilogy (!!!) of movies centered around this Detective Knight character. Because reasons. But some of the performances are, dare I say, decent, and it's not as much of a chore to sit through as some of these have been. This is Bruce's 9th movie of 2022. This man is not going out quietly. And nor should…
