    Initially I gave this 3 and a half because of how bleak it is, but on reflection I realised how it has to be - and why that makes it so moving as well as uncompromising a depiction of depression.

    What this film shows is not one young man's struggle, but also how a lack of empathy from friends and loved ones can be devastating.

    Occasionally darkly hilarious, mostly depressing, sometimes kinda hot in a sleazy, porny way, and a few times quite vile in what it subjects Elizabeth Shue to. The hypnotic/Lynchian stuff works for me, Cage is amazing of course, but the sexual politics are really very bad and it has a bleak view of humanity that isn't rewarding in anyway
