Lesbianism, Hollywood, serving bob, dreamy realness. It’s a thinker, isn’t it? Portrayed LA in a way probably close to real, yet somehow unfamiliar. Naomi Watts, you’re a winner baby. Justin Theroux, I was unaware of your game. And was that Miley’s dad in bed with your wife?
One of those movies you could watch on mute and be mesmerized nonetheless—the cinematography still astounds some 57 years after its premiere, and a quarter century after its titled setting. And yet the soundtrack, as light on dialogue as it is, tells as much of the story as what’s on screen.
I benefitted from reading the corresponding book, which similarly transfixed me and provided context that the movie itself may have left a little too vague.
Appreciated the comedy of this movie, as well as the individual characters - with great credit to a strong cast. I can’t imagine it’s easy to maintain humour while everyone’s talking over one another, in two different languages no less, but the actors pulled it off over and over again. I enjoyed the role language played, adding some mystique throughout the scenes. I also enjoyed the perspective shown of the exotic dancers which seemed a believable portrayal of their experience,…
