I’m a total sucker for long takes, especially a 2+ hour film that’s simply one long take.
Would this be nearly as good as a “traditional” film? No. I think the director even made a traditional version first, with edits, and he didn’t think it was very good.
Do you also have to suspend some disbelief? Yes. However, this is such an impressive feat and I was totally mesmerized by it.
Rewatched this since The Big Picture podcast just named this the 24th best film of the last 25 years.
It’s excellent, no doubt about it. I love that so many people I trust have this as a 4.5 or 5. I still don’t have it that high and I don’t know why. Have a feeling I’ll get there at the next watch!
In hindsight, clearly a mistake for this to be my first Leos Carax film as it’s a very abstract, 41 minute short film where he reflects on his career. Will definitely need to circle back to this after checking out some of his full length features.
Not really my cup of tea style-wise BUT he’s clearly doing something nobody else is doing, and that’s great.
