Badly paced and acted, but beautiful to look at, this science fiction story is neither epic or emotional, using cliche at every turn to tell it's story, hoping it's marquee star, surrounded by beauties, can trick you into watching it (it did). Some nice ideas in this one, but it was awkward and goofy, like some xeroxed script that nobody wanted to green-light. Not a good one. 3/5 stars.
Rush is a saturated world full of daring and risk taking, men who truly live life on the edge.
Sound cliche? Rush is and it isn't. It compensates for it's traditional sports plot (2 adversaries dueling it out in the name of glory) by being entertaining, visually lush, and showcasing it's compelling true life story.
I give it an 8/10, I enjoyed the sound and cinematography, and the true life story is something I'm going to read about. Fine film.
The Broken Circle Breakdown is a weepy art house film that is the poor man's Blue Valentine; a bluegrass couple sulks, mourns, and sulks again, albeit with pretty cinematography and a nice soundtrack. This movie is all surface, fire and brimstone: it's unique and cliche at the same time, a weird mix that doesn't pay off. Both leads feel like musicians who are "going for it" as actors, their performances are full of effort and passion but have no subtlety whatsoever.
Skip it and watch a better foreign film instead- Jagten, aka "The Hunt".
