A follow up to THE breakout horror film of 2018 comes with many of the same impressive technical elements as its predecessor. While it slightly stumbles in raising the stakes beyond just the wellbeing of the family it features satisfying callbacks and a triumphant conclusion just like the first film did. The film once again foregoes much deep characterization in favor of congruent action sequences which I have to say are compellingly suspenseful. It's technically impressive with a sprinkle of half-decent plot crafting that so many horror flicks forego entirely, and I see it as an ever so slight improvement over the first installment.

Summer of Soul (...Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised) 2021
Between the extreme rarity of the footage shown, the miracle that it still even exists, the exceptional quality of the performances on display and the deft hand used in assembling it all like a tight puzzle piece into the cultural landscape of the late 60's, Summer Of Soul is a pop culture masterclass. A genius, often stunning retrospective stands tall and proud aligned with its black history and tributes the creatives who inspired and continue to inspire people everywhere. It has everything one could want in a music documentary, strong identity, acute cultural awareness and excellent, excellent music.
