This movie rightly uses baseball as the American institution that it is to explore community, purpose, and purposelessness. No sport or hobby evokes as much nostalgia as baseball and for a film filled with allusion to days gone I was sucked into all the trappings.
The paradox of baseball is that it is simultaneously the loneliest and most communal sport. Truly there is very little teamwork and most actions are isolating and individual, but at the same time standing in a dugout waiting for some action can be like a confessional.
This was wonderfully melancholy and hilarious I can’t wait to annoy my friends recommending it.
