One of the sloppier selfish-to-selfless plots I’ve seen in a while. Maybe a handful of scenes with Natalie Portman would make any man a better person, but Thor’s shift is laughably unearned. The Thor/Loki stuff is sturdier ground, but still undercooked. Why cast Rene Russo if you’re not going to give her anything to do?
Definitely a dip from the first one, but not as steep a decline as I remembered (a recurring theme for me with these Phase 1 films so far). Rourke makes a solid villain. The plot isn’t as sharp, but it’s still relatively clean.
The Scarjo stuff is kind of embarrassing. Nothing to do with Scarjo, of course. She’s great. It’s all just a gross product of the time in which the movie was made.
A tough nut to crack in one viewing. I’ll want to revisit this and think about it a bit more. Here are some preliminary thoughts:
-I’m not sure I liked the way Nolan chose to structure the plot. Do we need the final hour of the movie? Do we need three timelines? Isn’t there a better, tighter version that ends with the speech after the stomping feet in the gymnasium? That version is probably a five-star classic…
