I think this is the most accessible version of Richard II I'm familiar with. By cutting it down to two hours the production manages to avoid the issue that many other ones have where some parts completely drag, and the plot is generally easier to understand for it. That being said, I was sad to see they cut out Aumerle's conspiracy against Henry IV because I do think it adds a little depth to the end of the play :(

For the first hour of this movie I was actually baffled as to how it has received such strong reviews. The pacing is questionable, a large amount of the line delivery falls flat, and the play was simply not translated well to film.

That being said I felt there was an incredibly noticeable shift in quality right at Act 3 Scene 2, and it was much more watchable after that. The actors' performances were all pretty solid, but I will say Whishaw's performance of Richard's deposition is genuinely one of the most gripping scenes I've seen acted out in Shakespeare. Also, his hair is gorgeous.
