I know what it is to exist… between the world’s certainties.

Conclave is an absolute masterclass in straightforward, skilled filmmaking. Remarkably crafted and beautifully executed at every turn, the film delivers a suite of intrigue, suspense, excitement, and introspection. Director Edward Berger is going ridiculously all-out on this story, one that could’ve felt like stale Oscar bait in the hands of a less perceptive filmmaker, but luckily Berger has a perfect grasp on what makes a film engaging. Much credit goes…

    We tolerate you.

I’m not going to repeat the tired superlatives and compliments that a million film critics and Letterboxd users have purported — I could sit here and talk about how The Brutalist is “monumental”, “visionary”, “one of the best films of recent years”, and it would all be true, but that’s not interesting. Instead, I want to acknowledge what a directorial feat this movie is — it’s not enough that the story is incredibly engaging, the characters beautifully crafted…

Why do I feel like the cultural conversation around nepo-babies took a 180 after this film dropped? PTA knew what he was doing. This movie is pure magic. Effortless charm and chemistry from Cooper and Alana, and Anderson has such a talent for making his stories feel so natural even when they’re going in all sorts of unexpected, wacky places. I could probably watch this a thousand times. Excellent soundtrack!

Fuck this. I don’t usually get angry over movies, but this one made me increasingly more infuriated the more I watched it. What an absolutely pathetic excuse for a Dracula adaptation made by a filmmaker whose egotism was clearly on full display. He manages to turn his all-star cast into statues and caricatures: How the hell am I snoozing at a performance by Winona Ryder? How am I supposed to believe that the most Keanu fucking Reeves is a 19th-century…

I’m a little biased because Billy Loomis is my husband but this movie is fucking amazing. The beginning of this iconic film franchise will remain one of the greatest horror movies of all time.

I want to talk to you… without speaking.

Luca Guadagnino’s second film of 2024, an adaptation of William S. Burroughs’ subversive novel Queer, is an absolute trip through the richest beauties and deepest anxieties of sexuality and love. Guadagnino creates a dazzling visual atmosphere that is so layered and surreal, reminding me of the work of René Magritte and Edward Hopper. The film can be either beautiful or horrifying or both simultaneously, but it is always visually stunning. Daniel Craig…
