  The bar was set quite high with 2000’s Gladiator, considered by many - this guy included - to be a masterpiece and one of the top 100 films in cinema history. Gladiator 2 was already faced with unbelievably high expectations because of this. I’m happy to report that Gladiator 2 is an incredible film.   NON-SPOILER - I’m happy to report that one of my most anticipated films of the year, ALIEN: ROMULUS, is a certified BANGER! This is a terrifying return to old school Alien form. The cinematography is gorgeous. The production design is 🤌 and also claustrophobic. This is why you go to the movies.

  There are plenty of nods to other Alien properties, including the video game Alien: Isolation, but you don’t need to have any reference for those things to enjoy…

  I very much appreciate what this film is trying to do from a genre perspective, a filmmaking perspective, and even a practical effects perspective. In the end, however, those elements don’t seem to come together in a cohesive enough story for me.
