    Everything about this film implies lazy Dreamworks cash in, but it's incredibly well crafted from every angle I care about. I have a theory that a CGI film from this period can be measured by how often they default to a standard blue sky in the background. And squad, there's not a single blue sky in this entire film: it's all magic hours and watercolour clouds.

    Takashi Yamazaki was able to build this in a year! With a budget of 15-million dollars!

    The craft of this film is inspiring. Every complaint I have with Legendary Pictures' Godzilla movies is addressed. Every concern I have about this not living up to Shin Godzilla's effort was misplaced.

    It's an excellent film, an inspired reimagining of the titular monster's meaning, and one of the most enjoyable filmgoing experiences I've had this year.

    I love that the culmination of the 60-minute first act is that it didn’t matter to what the protagonist wanted (keeping his son safe) and the war (it kept going). In fact, the only consequence of the Rasputin portion of the film—which, coincidentally, contains some of its funnest stuff—is the passage of time. Literally. They have a birthday party, and the son goes to war. Should’ve been played as funny, not tragic. 

    Also Gemma Arterton’s character did… everything? She made…
