Miller's Crossing 1990
Really, really good noir flick focused on a double crossing Irish mobster, attempting to work angles during a conflict between Irish and Italian factions. Like all Coen works, atmospheric as hell, with the well-crafted dialogue they’re known for.

High Noon 1952
A man searches for community in the town he devoted himself to protect, and finds absolutely none. Very interesting to read as a statement on the screenwriter declining to testify to the House Un American Activities Committee, and learning all his supposed likeminded friends did. In this movie, any belief in the greater good or any goals beyond the immediate are looked at with scorn. It’s an extremely cynical Western, with a tone more in line with a Clint Eastwood joint than anything contemporary. (High Plains Drifter can be easily read as response to this film.)
