Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone 2001
Mostly find the episodic vignette-ish structure of the majority of the movie kind of exhausting. Couple with some overly precocious child acting, the worst aged CGI of the series, and the fact that this rewatch was after a fatal 6 hour nap, it just didn’t quite connect. It is extremely impressive how much visual world building happens here, though, the wizarding world feels so unique and lived in through the creature and set designs that it’s hard not to get…

Joker: Folie à Deux 2024
booooooooorrrrring. intellectually, emotionally, thematically bankrupt. it had nothing to say and said it for way too long. couldn’t decide what it wanted to be and settled on pastiche of a thousand tired tropes wrapped into a retread of the first movie. doesn’t help that the movie’s portrayal of mental health is just as vintage as the 80s set dressing. it’s slop. pure frictionless slop.

The Silence of the Lambs 1991
More mixed feelings on rewatch than I anticipated. People better suited to comment on the film’s inherent transphobia have written at length on it. Notable is that even at the time it was controversial for its anti-LGBTQ themes. I enjoyed it, still do on a basic in-a-vacuum level, but it’s impossible to ignore the sour taste in my mouth now. One of the most maligned groups in the world doesn’t deserve to be a literary shorthand for freak or predator, no matter the merits of the film that hatred inhabits. I think this may be my last viewing.
