  It seems like, what was akin to your average Disaster/ Thriller flick, was saved in part, by an unabashed use of Gore and a willingness to bring immense bodily harm to the protagonists (and side characters) - harm that would stop just short of death.

  Otherwise, the Father-Daughter relationship was stale and trope-y - never finding a true resolution or actually leading to any significant character development.
