This offering from Shults is a powerhouse of suspense. Constantly I would find myself cringing for what was to come. Minimalist in design and scope, but effective nonetheless. The lighting too, was simple in nature but powerful in its presentation, making the viewer feel singular and vulnerable. Sound, was excellent throughout the film, with foley work and sound effects keeping the film together nicely. The concept of the film reminded me a lot of a certain PC genre of games that are still fairly new...open world survival. All of these elements combined produce an awesome film that is unique, refreshing, and modern. Gas masks on.

Solid entry to Jeff Nichol's small catalog of films. Take Shelter instills a relentless paranoia on its main protagonist Curtis. Keeping you guessing at what is real and what it not. The rambunctious cousin to Peter Jackson's 2005 adaptation of Kong's origin story. Still great in its action, but not really adding anything new to the table that Jackson's remake can't provide. If your a fan of giant monster movies give this film a watch its a good one.

Afflecks take on an emotional freelancer turned gangster. This is an interesting take on the prohibition time piece, in that this mafia tale is more about love. Affleck's character Coughlin's consequences that his life of crime has caused for others. This makes for a film that is mostly conversation and dialogue, usually not a problem although it's a longer feature. Not to say this film is not interesting just drags in its pacing. The cinematography and shots are absolutely beautiful. If your a fan of mafia gangster films this probably won't be up in your favorites, but doubles well as a thriller and romance film.
