The concept is very promising, like this territory of cults and human trauma.
And I still find the characters interesting, but the execution is so poor. Like deep traumas became just a show with a lack of artistic vision—meaning very flat DOP work.
The camera is just flying around the characters.
The directing is also unsatisfying—there could be so much space for mystery, something unsaid, undone, which would make the whole level of the show better. …
“Why did you become sick?”
“I punished myself.”
I love the movie, but I wouldn’t rewatch it, and I wouldn’t recommend it to people who prefer action-driven films.
It’s a slow, melancholic film, but it’s so precise and beautifully crafted that it leaves a lasting impression.
Beautifully shot. Expensively made. Completely boring. My deepest sympathy goes out to the poor camels.
I can’t decide what shocked me more: the drug dealer who dreams of becoming a woman or the French director who doesn’t speak Spanish, has never lived in Mexico, made a musical about a cartel… in Paris studios… and won Cannes for it!
