Astounding. Silly. Goofy. And that’s kenough to make a good movie for me. Nothing is subtle, even in the delivery of themes or product placement, but they do manage to develop things and keep pieces dynamic. The process of this movie isn’t to slowly reveal anything, it is to reveal something instantly, and with that unabashed openness, develop further. That process allows for the wonderful performances, set design, humor, and writing, to shine in a film that so easily could have become a corporate propagandist piece of faux feminism. Instead it is an incredibly human story about a doll becoming a woman.
There’s a bear on cocaine and it’s kind of a family story really, but on cocaine
Sometimes trying to hard to be funny, but the narrative structure is unexpected and interesting. The characters endear themselves to you because they try too hard. So many lines don’t work and somehow that makes these characters more relatable, whether intentional or not. That’s what I enjoy about a Gunn film. You will get something wholly his way and that integrity adds a level of validity to this film making it a worthwhile watch, even with the ridiculous expository dialogue.
Wayyy too long, hilarious at the wrong moments, and devoid of fun when it needs it. Javier Bardem should have been everyone in this film. It was both campy and “artsy” with no intention behind. There was no thematic through line or appropriate attention to scale making everything feel like a checklist to look like the little mermaid rather than a story worth watching.
