Boys Don't Cry 1999
The way Kimberly Peirce depicts Brandon Teena is so realistic which makes this film all the more heart wrenching. This film was made just 6 years after the real life murder of Brandon. Peirce’s depiction centers the story around queerness in a way that was rarely seen at the time. Brandon is authentically himself and Hillary Swank did such a phenomenal job at portraying all the complexities that come with being gender queer. It also provides commentary on the concept of masculinity as a whole and breaks down the idealized premise of small town America. Overall an amazing film.

I know some people find this film boring but I found it truly unnerving. You never really see anyone’s face and a majority of shots are facing corners. The fact that you can’t really see what’s going on adds to the suspense. You’re left wondering.
