Atmosphere saves, or rather is, the day here, as the performances all seem to be coming from different films and the script goes nowhere slowly. Cage is in human prop mode, disappearing not at all behind cakey makeup and scaring somehow even less behind familiar if entertaining outbursts, undermining the otherwise quite successful and astonishing efforts to create an unrelentingly tense atmosphere. So it turns out that Joey Cramer of 1986's "Flight of the Navigator" did some time later in life for, among other things, trying to rob a bank. You'd be forgiven for thinking this would make him a more interesting person to listen to, but Cramer turns out to be a pretty basic-seeming nice dude trying to put his life back together and kick his addictions and play a little guitar.
