Killing Them Softly 2012
This shit is fighting above its weight class. Sure, Brad is in it. But other than that it’s a mid market genre flick with actors who you kind of recognize. The ideas aren’t perfectly fleshed out and I’m not sure I will enjoy the Obama clips upon rewatch, but goddamn if I don’t appreciate what they’re going for here. It was concise, had well developed characters, and I understood the point it was trying to make. The gandolfini cameo was macho in a way that makes me question where James drew the line in his own life. Good music choices. Surprising action.

The rufallo character is too similar to his portrayal in poor things. A choice can easily become a trope with repetition.
The construction of the Toni Colette character was by far the strongest. The nails, the “complex” sauces, her sexual aversions. Wish I got more of her before the end.

In a situation where I was fearing the worst and hoping for the best, Lana came through with a film that exceeded expectations and hit some of the revelatory notes that made the original trilogy so fascinating.
