Guys will be like "I know a spot" and then this film happens.
Beautifully shot and directed, the atmosphere is perfect; I wouldn't have expected a film set in space to feel this claustrophobic. With so much of the film set in beautifully designed and lit corridors entirely in focus, there's always a sensation of every corridor being a bit too long to navigate safely, of every goal being just a bit too distant.
Also, David Jonsson is a star.
Simone Ashley is as charming, charismatic, and luminous as ever, and there are capable and delightful performances around her (Luke Fetherston, Sindhu Vee); but they're not enough to save a flawed film. Pia (Simone Ashley) is written with depth and strength only when she is not dealing with men, but rather the complexities of her career, friendships, and family. Just one of those films to remind you why the medium of animation exists.
A Different Man was at times darkly comedic, and startlingly clever when I wasn't expecting it to be. But throughout the length of it, it's just very subtly unsettling. What initially seem like peculiar camera movements, odd framings, and out of place scenes are cleverly mirrored and contrasted as the film progresses; and things said that seem both benign and odd are later warped into weighty comedy.
