The anti-racist messaging in this did feel sort of hollow and liberalised in a way that was kinda cringe (at least they had the grace to give the little black girl the beauty pagent award instead of the white character) BUT this film did have some nice and cute messaging about body positivity embedded in the narrative, which gave it heart (kind of). The musical numbers were fun and I enjoyed Pfeiffer, Efron and Walken; it was an alright film. Must watch the John Waters OG at some point.

Still though, John Travolta... I mean I get what he was going for here but... yikes.

A mish-mesh of the fuzzy, dream-like, digitized horror of Inland Empire, Benny's Video and Videodrome, combined with themes of disassociation via Internet and gender dysmorphia, also backed by a fucking stellar performance from Anna Cobb and a beautifully haunting score from Alex G.

I have a slight feeling its going to take me a couple of re-watches for me to fully fall in love with this, but because of how, (through this digital-horror lens that Schoenbrun uses) its a film…

Always surreal to think that Zendaya was filming the first season of Euphoria around the time this was made. Imagine filming a scene from this film, where MJ says a quirky line of dialogue behind a massive green screen, in front of Tom Holland in a mo-cap costume, the next she's filming a scene where Rue has a mental breakdown, and then fucking OD's.

Also the scene where Mr. Harrington is talking about how his wife pretended to "blip" was hilarious. Why wasn't the film filled with more of this kind of humour?
