Its an 80's movie that's for sure. I did like the idea of this disparate collection of jocks, Stacy's, freaks and geeks who wouldn't normally interact finding a shared connection in their adolescent suffering under social expectation (from parents and society).
But man, found the characters at points insufferable and the eccentricities of this weekend detention ridiculous (the counselor was such an ass, the poor library getting destroyed, Bender, etc.)
Damn good body horror movie. So good I never want to watch it again. Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley deserve their flowers cause god damn that was a rollercoaster balancing social commentary with grotesque and sometimes absurd imagery.
Honestly what an absolutely beautiful movie. Blue Giant gets at the core of what makes music exciting, the experimentation, the attempt to capture the essence of something before it gets sheleved into a simplified genre category to be more easily engaged with.
Using Jazz as the music medium to tell that story at our point here in the 21st century where that sound is far from center stage truly made for a captivating and emotional experience as I found myself as excited about the music and what it could do as the films protagonists!
