A Movie of Warning Signs (spoilers for this & First Reformed): Considering I’ve only seen late-age Scorsese and Schrader up to this point, it’s particularly fascinating to see them at a younger, angrier (likely less sober) point in their careers. The filmmaking seems no less confident, but it feels more impressionistic; the brassy score substituting for and emulating the traffic, the claustrophobic cuts to the increasingly hiked taxi fare, the dissociating overhead shots of Travis’ hands during transactions and social interactions.…
