Marvel’s fall from grace continues with Captain America: Brave New World. Unfortunately, the new phases of the MCU miss the charm and heart of what made the earlier phases so well loved. In no uncertain terms, this is not a reflection of Anthony Mackie. He fills the shoes of Chris Evans and Steve Rogers effortlessly, showing more than enough gravitas to be a leading man in Hollywood.

Despite this, and the hilarious dynamic with the new Falcon, the good parts…

There were some definitely great parts about this movie. Memorable lines in the script, some gorgeous cinematography, that god awful feeding noise, and some stellar performances. Overall, though? It was alright. This felt more like a passion project for the sake of aesthetic than a story with emotion, stakes, or perspective. A hollow shell of gorgeous visuals draped over the bones of what could’ve been…

This movie is background noise. Bateman and Egerton did a good job overall, but the suspension of disbelief required to actually enjoy this movie is entirely too much for anyone who has ever stepped in an airport. It’s campy, it’s corny, and it is somehow a Christmas movie. You’re not missing anything if you skip this one.

This was a fun movie. Definitely refreshing in the recent age of Marvel movies. Hugh Jackman back as Logan is always a treat and him finally wearing the yellow and blue made the kid in me who grew up on Fox’s X-Men very happy.

It’s a great popcorn watch, just corny enough, but holy shit did they do amazing with the suits in this movie. One in particular felt ripped out of the pages of a comic book and seeing that character in live action finally was amazing. Fun movie, would watch again at some point down the line, but happy with a one-off for now.
