The best robot movie I've seen in a long time.
After "Ex Machina," I thought I had sworn off the genre for a while, but Dan Stevens made me eat my words. This German-language film is funny in an off-kilter and sometimes dark way, successfully avoiding the terror that comes with so many AI flicks. If I had a dollar for every time the commentators said the word “rain,” I could have afforded a ticket to this opening ceremony.

It would be easy to hate "Past Lives" for being trapped in that place between apathy and catharsis. Rather than the freeing sensation of a good cry, this film leaves you with a dull pain tinged with disappointment. If you liked the ending of "La La Land," you'll love the ending of this movie. It's realistic (to a fault?). You get the sense that every character's life has gotten a little worse following the events of the final chapter.
