I always thought Saw was just torture porn for the sake of some grisly body horror, and maybe that’s true for the sequels, but damn this film was TENSE. While there’s still a lot of fucked up situations involving pain, most of it isn’t shown at all, leaving your mind to fill in the gaps. While I enjoy this film, I think it’s biggest weakness is knowing that it’s supposed to be psychological horror, cause this film doesn’t pace itself that way. The first 1/3 is a normal drama film, the second is a suspense film, and the third is when the horror truly arrives. So if you know it’s genre, you’ll be waiting for scares to arrive the whole time. It works much better when you don’t know anything about it going in.
