  The Lower Depths 1957

  One of Kurosawa's darkest films. It is shot more as a play. Numerous actors share one set for nearly the entire film. Kurosawa takes a nihilistic view of poverty and the ability to escape it. Whereas most Kurosawa films are rooted in humanism, The Lower Depths feels entirely different. I love the chances taken but the hopeless approach causes this one to drag a bit and left me feeling empty... but maybe that is the entire point.

  A Quite Place II is a decent sequel but never reaches the level of its predecessor. The increase in action leads to a noticeable decrease in tension and atmosphere. The performances are solid. The cinematography is beautiful and yet something is missing. A Quite Place II ramps everything up and loses a bit of what makes the original special. The franchise is an example of less is more.
