  More of a masochistic infatuation than a romantic love, but Ophüls is skilled enough to make it feel genuine and romantic regardless. This could have been overly sentimental in the hands of a lesser filmmaker, but as is, it’s a beautiful story of a woman’s obsession with a man who barely acknowledges her—and it absolutely flies by.
