Thinking about how Miyazaki films convey the sublime, in the sense of holding beauty and terror in both hands. What kind of encapsulates that for me is this film’s gray heron character—majestic and grotesque—a bird-man hybrid that I found totally enthralling, but also disturbing, in the way that only Miyazaki’s character designs can pull off.
