This film is both beneficiary and victim of an incredibly strong early opening scene. It’s extremely gripping, and, for ten minutes, has you fully immersed in the emotional distress the characters are experiencing. It’s expertly blocked, and impressively performed and realised. It’s so strong, that inevitably the scenes that follow from it suffer from the sense that the air has already been released from the balloon. It would be unreasonable to ask the film to sustain the intensity from that…
Inspiring to see Nolan using his limitations (as a first-time director) to his advantage. Interesting also to see that his playfulness with time and linear structure took hold right at the very beginning. Performances aren’t great, but it’s more than compensated for but story structure and imagery.
