Bullitt is a procedural cop thriller that’s heavy on the procedural aspect of that. The extent the film goes to show the plodding, slow unraveling nature of detective work through McQueen’s tired, hopeless, sunken eyes. He seems utterly cut off from everything around him, a rote machine just doing his job. The car chase in the middle is everything everyone says it is. Thrilling, kinetic, unconventional, and masterfully shot and staged. But even among all this, Bullitt seems more tired…
