First half felt to much like a mediocre action movie to keep me fully entertained. The last act was better but afterards the impresion that not all potential was achieved, lingers.
I am blown away by this powerful film.
This picture is one of the best I have seen this year: an interplay of plot and cinematography. An incredibly gripping story with a well-thought-out plot structure that makes you feel for the characters.
Cinematographically, the authentic use of colour from the 70s, in which period most of the story takes place, was particularly striking. The image looked charmingly grainy and slightly overexposed. While the more modern shots were filmed digitally in a crisp manner.
One small point of criticism: the final scene felt a bit superfluous, to conclude the plot in a memorable way.
What a cinematic experience! This is a movie made to be watched on the big screen!
The story itself; while raw and compelling; touching themes of talent, possibilities, tolerance and Hurt inflicted by others; sometimes feels too average to stick with you for a long time after watching the movie.
But where the movie really stands out is its art direction (think grand cinema experiences of the 50's and 60's with natural lighting, compelling close ups and half wide shots…
This one really is a slow burner. The first and third act are very strong but the middle hour feels mostly redundant. The slow pace itself is not a problem (together with the beautiful shots of Japanese nature, roads and cities it determines the charm of the film), but with a runtime of almost 3 hours it does make the film less accessible for An easy watch. In my opinion this could have been solved by drastically reducing the theater scenes, and this the runtime to 2 hours. In that cause this world have been a (near) perfect picture.
