The Pillow Book 1995
greenaway starting to slide into his full blown moving pictures scrapbook stage here. really funny seeing the reviews from the non-greenaway fans just here for the mcgregor dong and weren't prepared for a complete abandonment of aspect ratio and natural shot composition.
greenaway isn't so much ahead of his time as he is outside of it - broadcasting from a dimension where film replaced traditional visual arts. where the frame is a painting, but so much more. a natural progression…

Death Watch 1980
shades of cuaron's children of men. shades of wenders's until the end of the world. reminiscent of keitel's traveler in ulysess' gaze. society crumbles in the most banal of ways and we cling to images of others, conjuring feeling from their narratives rather than our own. a road movie through urban decay, rubble, grey skies and pointless aimless protest. there are those who have eked out lives of art, continuing g the grand human traditions in the cracks and crevices…

Paris, Texas 1984
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
spent this entire film trying desperately to connect to it and couldn't quite do it. it's well-crafted, beautifully achingly shot, the performances are stellar. but it lost me after travis took his son and ran. Halloween 1978
spending 70k of a 300k shoestring budget on a panaglide camera was a choice so inspired and so risky that it feels divine and inexplicable. and it sells the entire film. the opening shot through the meyers house? the camera spending most of the film looming and stalking and always just There? perfect. 10/10. feels like fall in the same way that texas chain saw feels like summer and black christmas feels like winter.
