Reminds me a lot of Paterson, in a good way.
A lot of people may find it boring, but I found Hirayama‘s simple appreciation for the small moments of beauty he encountered throughout the day to be a refreshing reminder to do the same.
A lot is left unsaid (why is he living alone, what’s the relationship with the rest of his family, etc), but I feel that makes the movie more engaging in retrospect.
It’s like Paterson in the…
Wow.
One of the most visually spectacular sci-fi movies I’ve ever seen. The sequence on Gedi Prime under the black sun is unlike anything I’ve ever imagined before. Great action scenes, amazing cinematography, all of the performances are top-notch (Butler is OUTSTANDING), and it leaves you wanting more.
Definitely need to see it again in theaters.
Seriously. Go see this on the biggest screen with the best sound system imaginable.
Can’t wait for part 3 (there HAS to be one at this point)!
It was… fine?
I like Cooper and Mulligan, both did tremendous jobs, there was some really interesting direction and artistic choices made, but the movie just didn’t connect with me. At times it felt like Cooper was turning his Bernstein up to 11 (especially in the conducting scene with Mahler’s 2nd - when compared to the real footage he almost looks like a caricature), and it almost took me out.
This is a textbook example of Oscar Bait, and that’s fine, those types of movies can still be really great, but it just didn’t land for me.
