Cinematography to the same extent of a Alfred Hitchcock romantic thriller, but somehow more perverse. The colours and costuming make the film to an extent, and the red herrings that are discovered to exist beyond the obvious plotline add depth to Oliver's (the main character) character arc.
For the roles of the other characters I think that how complex they too are represented, allows for the 'puppeteer' subplot to go unseen. to look for the specific clues that are left…
