  Well first, I must say this movie is exquisitely beautiful. You are fully transported to Vietnam. It feels like an honest and revealing depiction of life on the farm in Vietnam. There is an underlying theme of colonialist Catholicism and its effects on the culture. The protagonist is grappling with the concept of faith throughout the whole film; in a very compelling way.
