I saw this for the first time when it was released in theaters and subsequently became the weird girl who carried the DVD around in my backpack at school in case I went to a friend’s house afterward (obviously so I could force them to watch it with me). It hits every single time I watch it and I don’t care if it’s basic for this to be my favorite Miyazaki movie!!!!! When Haku tells Chihiro they’ll meet again and not to turn around if she wants to make it out safely, it makes me weep. They’re so Orpheus+ Eurydice coded.

As a kid I would watch this movie on repeat and burst into tears each time they humiliate Quasimodo at the Festival of Fools…a character trait I have (unfortunately) taken with me into adulthood. I would do this so often my mom suggested we “take a break” from watching it. I think I lasted a week or two before slipping it back into the VHS player. The score alone for this movie deserves more than five stars! This is ART!!!
