Coup! 2023
One of the more unheralded films at Venice this year, but also one of my favorites. Peter Sarsgaard is excellent and unexpectedly funny as a shifty drifter during the Spanish Flu. The co-star, William Magnussen, is perfectly cast as an elitist journalist whose life is turned upside down when his own servants rebel. It’s an enjoyable film, pleasantly devious, and I appreciate how it isn’t afraid to mock American politics and how polarized the country has become. Had me laughing out loud on numerous occasions.
