  120 minutes of art persevering. This movie’s existence is a testament to the passion of countless people and the singular vision of a mad genius. Actually insane that this is something I can just watch whenever I want. Gets better every time and even more gorgeous in the intended black and white.

  Agonizing. Blasphemously unearned Flaming Lips needle drop over the credits. Then again, see the quote above and realize this may just be a brilliant self-satire about Netflix’s current catalog.

  “There’s no love to your violence.” 

       Aesthetically, I’m all over this. Aggressively digital imagery, scenes freezing as the camera repositions itself within space, velvet pants reflecting the hellish sunlight as the unstoppable sadist meets the immovable masochist. I do see this as a genuine commentary on ultraviolence, morbid curiosity, and how these things interact with our culture (and more specifically masculinity) but Miike is evidently avoiding a concrete thesis. Could use a rewatch - no time soon.
